Understanding truffle growing
Truffle-growing training: choosing a course for your project
Choose truffle-growing training around the decision you need to make: assessing land, planning a plantation or improving an existing grove. Then compare the syllabus, practical work and enrolment conditions.

Your business guide : Starting a truffle-growing project: from land to planting decisions

Start with a specific question
Write down what you want to be able to decide after the course. Asking whether your land is suitable calls for an introduction to site assessment and advice on your plot. Asking how to monitor an existing plantation calls for more work on management and observations. Course length alone does not show whether the content suits you.
- First introduction: understand the species, the role of trees and the grower’s work.
- Planting project: learn to assess the plot, compare planting stock and plan maintenance.
- Existing grove: choose further training addressing your questions about soil, water, pruning or monitoring.
Compare courses using the same criteria
Introductory programmes from the Drôme Chamber of Agriculture and Lycée Drôme Provençale cover plot and plant selection, maintenance and harvesting. They combine theory with observations in a grove. Check which tasks the proposed session lets you practise in the field.
Le Valentin’s module, delivered by the CFPPA in Nyons, also includes mycorrhization, harvesting and economic topics, with visits to industry participants. The Gard CIVAM programme explores biology, ecology and cultivation practices in more depth. These contents serve different learning goals.
Request the syllabus for the session actually open for enrolment. The references below help you compare providers; they are not a calendar of available places. Confirm the next session, location and arrangements directly with the provider.
What practical work should help you learn
A visit helps your project when you understand why a particular intervention is chosen and when it applies. Ask whether you will analyse observations, handle tools or discuss a specific case. For a planting project, bring your analyses and questions if the instructor accepts this preparatory work.
- How much time is spent in the classroom, online and in the grove?
- Which tasks do participants carry out themselves?
- Does the course explain how to adapt a practice to the site rather than repeat a fixed method?
- Which assessment and materials help you continue the work afterwards?
Check the audience, prerequisites and arrangements
The word ‘professional’ does not tell you whether a course accepts beginners, agricultural employees or applicants without a farm. Ask about the expected level, required documents and any age conditions. Also check the teaching language, digital tools, travel to the plot, equipment and adjustments available for particular needs.
Request funding without assuming approval
In France, VIVEA checks matters including contributor status, up-to-date training contributions and current activity. Applicants preparing to establish a farm have specific conditions. Ask the provider to verify your situation and funding for the session before finalising your budget. The subject of truffle growing alone does not guarantee funding.
For CPF funding, check the exact offer on Mon Compte Formation. Le Valentin’s module states that it is not CPF eligible. For a France Travail application, the project must be approved with your adviser before funding is possible. These are French schemes: if you live elsewhere, check local options. Request the full price and any meals, travel or accommodation you must pay for.
Attendance record and certification: check the document awarded
An attendance record or completion certificate documents participation in training; it does not by itself establish that you gained a recognised professional certification. If certification is advertised, request its title, RNCP or RS code and required assessments. France compétences lets you check the registration’s validity and the providers authorised to prepare candidates.
Prepare your enquiry to the provider
Your first message can be brief: describe your experience, project stage, the plot’s municipality, available soil data and the decision you want to prepare. Request the current syllabus, next session, fieldwork time, prerequisites, document awarded and quotation. This gives you concrete answers to compare before enrolling.
A visit to start observing in the field
La Truffe française’s three-hour workshop in Suze-la-Rousse combines searching with dogs and tasting. It can introduce the handler’s work and help you frame your first questions. To learn to establish or manage a plantation, choose suitable technical training and have your own plot assessed.
